The very first HBC update of 2010 (and I guess the decade, if you're into that sort of thing).
We got all manner of sundries and novelties for you to enjoy:
*Reviews involving the holy trinity of excitement: Detectives! Nerds! Graphs! (With added bonus reviews involving the EU, salesmen, child molestation, and wizards.)
*Max interviews Jasper Fforde and it's the most British interview we've ever ran (spoiler alert: it involves tea)
*A lovely Dorothy Parka run-down on what you Gen X-ers should have been reading to obtain MAXIMUM CRED.
*Reach deep inside and harness your inner Rob Fleming: Our annual "Top 5s" feature with Frank Portman, Mary Otis, Reverend Jen, Matthew Zapruder, A. Lee Martinez, Andrew Jackson Jihad, and Elizabeth Crane
*Ladies: join Yennie in a pursuit of patriachy-smashing excellence.
*Kyle is a filthy hippie who won't eat a steak like a real American (though he wants to). |

| Books of 2009 |
[Jan. 1st, 2010|12:28 am] |
As I did last year, rather than pollute the community with a crosspost of my whole list, I'll simply link to my own post: clicky clicky click.
This year's Top 10 list includes a book that almost made me want to read poetry, two riotously funny debut novels (one a thriller, one a very long, very bitter letter), a half-century-old nearly-lost masterpiece, a quietly wonderful saga of two brothers, a super new novel by a stalwart of the literary scene, an awfully funny and strange novel about a family, and two collections of short stories: one a strange and shattering debut, the other all the more amazing for the fact that I'd never even heard of the author before despite that this is her seventh book or so. |

| Short Story collections |
[Dec. 31st, 2009|02:11 am] |
Hey folks,
Now that mr_clarinet has you thinking about short stories, I have a similar query for you. An acquaintance of mine is looking for good, recent short story collections written by people of color to have her writing class to read. Any ideas?
Here are some of my thoughts: Say You're One of Them by Uwem Akpan Anything by Sherman Alexie Drown by Junot Diaz The Laws of Evening by Mary Yukari Waters Once the Shore by Paul Yoon
And here are a few she has been suggested: Not the End of the World by Kate Atkinson <--ETA: Not sure why this is here. I don't think she's a minority. Edwidge Danticat Jhumpa Lahiri Hope and Other Dangerous Pursuits by Laila Lalami ZZ Packer
Thanks! |

| What should I do with my life? |
[Dec. 29th, 2009|10:01 pm] |
"What should I do with my life?" - I'm trying to find a book that helps me answer that question. Any suggestions?
I started Po Bronson's book with that title years ago, but I felt like he was being condescending and judgmental toward his subjects, so I didn't make it past the first few chapters. (Anyone else feel this way? Or should I give it another shot?)
I also have "What Color Is My Parachute?" but it's pretty annoying and useless. Plus, it focuses on the nitty-gritty (e.g. how to get your resume in the door) but I want something more macro - like zeroing in on what would actually make for a rewarding career.
Part how-to, part motivational - but nothing too self-helpy that would ruin my hipster cred. Let me know your thoughts. |

( Read more... ) |

| Kindle books! |
[Dec. 25th, 2009|12:06 pm] |
Merry Christmas, all! I have an odd request.
I got a Kindle for Christmas, but I'm not sure which books are available for it. What are the best books you know of that are available on the Kindle?
I love contemporary poetry (actually, any poetry really) and I'm interested in (but not limited to) reading new fiction. My favorite books include The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers, Reasons to Live by Amy Hempel, and Quicksand by Tanizaki Junichiro. |
